Learn meteorJS by building web apps

Monday, November 23, 2015

MeteorJS is a great point to start learning to build web app , especially if one is new to building building web apps.

The greatest advantage of writing apps in MeteorJS is that it uses a single programming language, Javascript , to code both the server side and the client side of the web application.

I'm not going into the details of how a web app works or how meteorJS eases the process of building a web app. I'l only write my road map to learn meteorJS.

I found that there are plenty of free tutorials and videos to start with. But you will not be able to decide which one you should read and which one not.

Therefore as a total beginner , I'm writing this blog to show you a starting point to learn MeteorJS.

First bookmark the following websites.

1. https://www.yauh.de/best-learning-resources-for-meteorjs/  : Curated list of tutorials and books

2. http://superdevresources.com/meteor-js-ebooks-tutorials/

3. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1498505377066142/    Login and join this facebook group. This facebook group also has curated free web tutorial links.

There are plenty of such web curated posts/articles, but the above would be sufficient. If you are pondering to follow them step by step, then probably it will take eons to learn and build something (if you are a beginner).

I'l show you how and where to start learning Meteor.js by building web apps without wasting your money.

First, you need to have a sound knowledge of the Javascript.
You will also find free tutorials on javascript on internet. A curated list of them is given below :

1. https://www.codecademy.com/learn/javascript : Online web interface

2. http://eloquentjavascript.net  : One of the best book I have read

2. https://github.com/getify/You-Dont-Know-JS  : Book

3. https://github.com/ericelliott/essential-javascript-links : List of curated tutorials and books

4. https://www.javascript.com/resources  : List of tutorials

6. https://www.codementor.io/learn-javascript-online  : List of tutorials

5. https://github.com/sorrycc/awesome-javascript : Book

6. http://bonsaiden.github.io/JavaScript-Garden : Book

7. http://addyosmani.com/resources/essentialjsdesignpatterns/book  : Book

I haven't had time to read all these books and tutorials, but I have completed all the exercises from codeacademy.com and few books.

I will assume that you already have prior knowledge of Javascript.

My road map till now is like this :-

1. "Where to start ?

First I went through the free blogs and tutorials on the web about MeteorJS. They are really good to read and informative. But there are so many of theme that you will not be able to decide .

2. Read and start practicing MeteorJS from http://meteortips.com/first-meteor-tutorial/
The best book for beginners. The chapters are free you do not need to buy the total book like discovermeteor.com .

I found people mention discovermeteor.com as the most deserving book to learn MeteorJS. So, I blindly bought the book. But, after I read  4 to 5 chapters , I found that this book has few gaps to fill for a total Meteor.js beginner. The same is quite visible if you go through the comments of people about any chapter. To me this book was not written from the learners point of view , but from a intermediate programmer point of view, who already knows the basics.

People may not agree with me, but I would not recommend this book to start learning MeteorJS.

3. Read http://www.meteor-tutorial.org/book . Another completely free e-book that gives insights to MeteorJS. Just give a read and practise one or two exercises from here.

4. Then start building real web apps by following the two video series from https://www.youtube.com/user/LevelUpTuts . The tutorials are have quality videos about Meteor.js and it is really grateful of them that they are offering these tutorials free of cost.

    a. Meteor For Everyone Tutorial

    b. Intermediate Meteor

Till now I have been following the Meteor For Everyone Tutorial and built resolutionslist.meteor.com following it .
The journey to learn MeteorJS has been awesome. :)

Learning MeteorJS is super easy . Once you learn, you will be able to build MVP of your own ideas yourself , without spending $7k to $10k to build a web app. Also you will the cretor of your own product. So, you don't have to make a developer understnat what exactly you want to make. :)

So don't wait, start learning MeteorJS on your own.
